The recruitment of activatedTlymphocytes in early lesions of atherosclerosis supports the concept that these cells are involved in atherogenesis (Tsukada et al, 1986; Munro et al 1987; Xu et al, 1990). Although the majority of recruited T lymphocytes are a/b TcR–bearing, a significant proportion (4.3%) of the T–cells in atherosclerotic plaques are g/d TcR–bearing (Kleindienst et al, 1993). There is an increase in the density of g/d T–cells seen in atherosclerotic lesions, with 6.6% in fatty streaks, and 9.7% in the transition zone between normal intima and fatty streaks. These compare with 3–5% in peripheral blood (Inghirami et al 1990), suggesting selective recruitment of these cells in early lesions of atherosclerosis. Moreover, since early lesions of atherosclerosis show the presence of an intact endothelium, the mechanisms involved in the transendothelial migration of T lymphocytes, including gd T–cells, may be especially relevant to the understanding of intimal accumulation of T–cells in atherogenesis.
