Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is defined as an acquired syndrome characterized by widespread activation of coagulation leading to intravascular formation of fibrin and thrombotic occlusion of small and midsize vessels thereby compromising blood supply to various organs. Hitherto, it has not yet been clarified whether the activation of coagulation is triggered locally (i.e., KasabachMerritt syndrome) or in the entire vascular bed. It is also conceivable, that the coagulation process is initiated locally extending to the whole microcirculation or that coagulation activation takes place in the entire vascular system while the formation of thrombi is a local process.
